The Journal from DavidRM Software
For many years I have been using this diary/journaling software, called The Journal. It rather befits its name in as much it is THE journal as far as I am concerned.
It is one of those pieces of software where you can see the author has gone to great lengths to get everything right. It is neat, beautifully presented and very practical.
At its simplest, you click a date on the left in the calendar, and start to type your entry on the right. You can include images of course.
There is more to it, but if I am honest, I have not explored a whole lot. The beauty of it to me is its simplicity, I really just want to make an entry and be done with it. This software allows that.
You can set a password for it to keep things secure and the database file is encrypted. Because of this, I have started something a little out of the ordinary perhaps, that is entering historical diary entries. Many of these are in paper diaries and so I have scanned these pages to individual jpegs. I then choose a date in the past and paste the image for that day in there. Hey presto, it brings past diaries into digital form and for my eyes only if necessary. The paper diaries can be destroyed if need be. To be honest, I have diary entries that I want to die with me! Doing this means I have a very simple means to view these entries whenever I wish, but when I’m gone, nobody is going to read my most private thoughts, things they weren’t meant to read!
I guess with the advent of Quantum Computing, the database could be cracked at some point, if someone was that interested!!
I highly recommend this software if you are looking for journaling software for your pc/mac. It appears to be available for Windows, Mac, Linux and I think Android now. Various discounts are available too if you fit one of the categories.
Acht I wish I’d thought of that, just chucked out all my teenage diaries last year!
But fyi, The Journal only works on Windows – it is the big disadvantage, as far as i’m concerned. I’m having to replace my pc with another Windows machine, which I might not have done otherwise.
Also, I can’t now get a reply from David, (about whether it will work on a particular Windows config) which is worrying.
Oh no! I must admit I can’t throw my originals away. I kind of did it so I could still see these things even when I am not able to get into the loft anymore to look at the real thing!
I’m ok with Windows for this although it would be really nice across platforms.
Thanks for leaving a comment 🙂
