DEFCON 27
I’m back at DEFCON again, it is difficult to stay away once you’ve been…
I seem to be going through the usual re-discovery of how to make life easier here, so I will blog notes here which will hopefully be useful to others too.
Eating:
Breakfast is probably best at McDonald’s at first. I remembered that I bought some single portion plastic tubs of Frosties in Walgreens or CVS Pharmacy. With a bottle of milk, that’s a nice quick breakfast before a day at the con.
For evening food, if you’re on your own like me and don’t fancy sitting in a restaurant on a table for one, then salads are a good option. Again, Walgreens and CVS Pharmacy are good. Sadly I’m not a ranch dressing fan which seems big over here. I should have brought some Heinz Salad Cream! They also do some nice rolls and sandwiches in those two shops, quite healthy options too.
Drinking:
I am at Ballys Hotel and they have a fridge in each room, or at least the rooms I have booked. At $90/night, they really are very good value.
BUT, this year, no means of making boiled water for TEA. Yes, TEA. You don’t know how much you want a morning cup of tea until there is no way to do it! So I just bought a $19.99 kettle in Walgreens, just down the strip. Possibly the best purchase I have ever made. The first cup was nectar.
Also, buy a LOT of bottled water. It’s around 40C while I’ve been here, just keep drinking. Fill your fridge with it.
Milk: They don’t have the nice simple supermarket brand whole/semi-skimmed/skimmed like the UK. They sell branded purified etc. type milks. The one I settled on is called ‘Half and Half’ by ‘Dairy Pure’. Tastes ok, I’m pretty sure it’s cow’s milk!!!
I’ll add more as it occurs…
